Battery De Golyer

The wood you see above comes from the U.S.S. Cairo, an ironclad ship, that was sunk on the Mississippi river during the civil war. The Confederates had a great advantage over the river but the Union tried to sneak past them one dark night. All but one ship made it past. At one point they had 22 Cannons that fired on the "Great Redoubt" throughout the campaign.

The tall monument in the distance is where the Great Redoubt took place. Battery De Golyer was made up of four battery's, one from Ohio, one from Michigan, and one from Illinois. (if anyone knows the other state represented please get in touch with me )Capt De Golyer was the commander of this battery and was the only one killed from that unit.

The view is the fortification called the "Stockade Redan".
Redan is a fortification with three points where a Redoubt is a square
fortification. The road is where the Union forces tried to attack. The blue
markers represent where the Union forces made it to. They never were able to
break through even after digging trenches and planting explosives. At one
point they made it to the ditches right underneath the fort, but the
Confederates simply light cannon balls and rolled them into the ditches.
